Barcelona and Purim: Against the Odds

PURIM: How both the Barcelona football team and the story of Purim teach us about the possibility of winning when the odds are stacked against you

Last night, Barcelona beat Paris Saint Germain in a Champions League game when all the odds were stacked against them. With just a few minutes remaining they needed to score 3 goals which they did in what people are calling one of the greatest sporting comebacks ever.

How Esther was chosen as the Queen, how Mordechai was recalled and was elevated to almost royalty, while the Jews’ nemesis Haman was defrocked and eventually hanged – all these combined in ways which, on the face of it, seem to be “against the odds”.
