When the State of Israel was declared on that fateful day in May 1948, David Ben-Gurion wrote in his memoirs that he felt he could not properly celebrate, since he knew that the consequences were that war would follow and blood would be spilled.
His words sadly came true and Israel paid a heavy price in the War of Independence when 1% of the population died as a result of the war.
