In this week’s parasha, we read of the purchase of Maarat HaMachpela (the Cave of Machpeala) in Chevron (Hebron) by Avraham – as a burial plot for Sarah and his family.
Recently, UNESCO have attempted to deny the historical connection of the Jewish people to this site – one of the holiest in Judaism (as they have done previously with the Western Wall and Temple Mount).
Why is this?
How can it be so? Avraham bought the land – as we know from the parasha – so why is it at all contested?
