The leading global co-working company, WeWork, was founded by Adam Neumann in 2010. Neumann was born in Israel and founded the company while living in New York. In a recent article in the Telegraph, Neumann revealed that in the last few years, his family have kept Shabbat, saying that it’s “a time to disconnect from technology, rest, recharge and establish a deeper connection with friends and family”.
In a further interview, he explains how he loves that Shabbat gives him quality time with his family. “We are cut off from the rest of the world, but in reality connecting with each other. I spend more time than I ever did with my family and even phone and see my mother more. And the real magic is that the more I do it, the more successful the company is. Go figure.”
At the same time that the Shabbat Project reached more than a million people in 97 countries, the following clip was being widely shared on social media of the Chief Executive of the huge UK-based retailer Next, Simon Wolfson. Wolfson was appearing as a guest on the BBC’s Question Time program when he told the audience on the flagship show that he turns his phone off for 25 hours every week:
