After holding consultations with parliament`s legal advisor and other officials in light of Labor MK Binyamin Ben-Eliezer`s decision to drop out of the presidential race, Knesset Speaker Yuli-Yoel Edelstein said Sunday that the plenum will elect Israel`s 10th president this coming Tuesday, as originally planned.

Edelstein said that over the past 24 hours he had been approached by numerous MKs and attorneys who offered him advice. Some, the Knesset speaker said, suggested that he postpone the election.

”The difficult atmosphere which continues to shroud the presidential race is creating dissatisfaction from the process and is casting a heavy shadow over the candidates and the Knesset itself,” Speaker Edelstein said.

”The No. 1 citizen must be number one in integrity, trustworthiness and morality, and attain the position of president in the most honest and cleanest manner. We are obligated to do everything so that this will be the case. To my regret, we cannot deny that fact that in the current climate the presidential election will void of any dimension of celebration or respect. However, out of a great fear of what the future may hold, I decided leave the election date as it is,” he added.
