From the Torah U’mada Journal, Rabbi Yakov Nagen discusses how to inject more spirituality into our gemara learning while grounding Jewish spirituality with textual study.
YAKOV NAGEN (GENACK) is Rosh Kollel at Yeshivat Otniel, a hesder yeshivah in the
Hebron hills. He is the author of several books in Hebrew: Nishmat Ha-Mishnah: A
Window to the Inner World of the Mishnah; Water, Creation and Immanence: Sukkot in
the Philosophy of Halakhah; and Awaking to a New Day: Stories and Insights from Life.
He has also published numerous articles on Gemara, the philosophy of Halakhah,
and Jewish spirituality. A graduate of Yeshiva College, he received semikhah ?rom
the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary, an M. S. from Yeshiva University’s
Bernard Revel School of Graduate Studies, and a Ph.D in Jewish philosophy ?rom
The Hebrew University.
