Mizrachi UK has announced that Rabbi Andrew Shaw is to become their new CEO.
Looking to develop its UK arm, the worldwide religious Zionist movement wanted to recruit an inspirational and innovative personality. Rabbi Shaw brings with him a proven track record as founder of Tribe, The United Synagogue’s youth division, and creator of the 60 Days and 70 Days Holocaust memorial projects which have had a worldwide impact on hundreds of thousands of people.
Commenting on Rabbi Shaw’s appointment Steven Blumgart, Chair of Mizrachi UK, said: “I want people to connect in a meaningful way with centrist Orthodox Judaism and with the people and State of Israel. To make this happen we need to take Mizrachi UK to the next level and Rabbi Shaw’s unique capacity to inspire and innovate make him the perfect person for the job.”
Rabbi Shaw is no stranger to leadership and brings with him 15 years’ experience as Community Development Rabbi at Stanmore and Canons Park United Synagogue where he has been credited with transforming the local community’s work with its youth and young families. He has also been a leading figure in the United Synagogue’s central organisation for more than a decade and is currently Director of their Living & Learning department.
Head of World Mizrachi, Rabbi Doron Perez said “We are in the process of re-energizing our World Movement across the globe and we are so excited and privileged to have Rabbi Shaw join us to drive forward our Movement in the UK.”
Speaking about his new role, Rabbi Shaw said: “So much of my work with members of the United Synagogue has been to help them feel inspired about their Judaism and their connection with Israel. As CEO of Mizrachi UK I hope to continue this work and build an ever stronger centrist orthodox Zionist community in Anglo-Jewry.”
Welcoming the appointment, Joshua Pomerance, Executive Director of Mizrachi UK, said: “Together we will be able to achieve great things for the UK Jewish community. I am thrilled to be working with Rabbi Shaw.”
Regarding the new appointment, Rabbi Kanterovitz, Chair of the Mizrachi UK Council of Rabbi’s said “I am very excited about this appointment, and I’m certain it will serve to further the ideology of the love of the People of Israel, the State of Israel and the Torah of Israel, here in the United Kingdom.”
Rabbi Shaw lives in Edgware and is married with two children.
