The leaders of the Tzohar Rabbis organization will meet today (Sunday) and announce the formation of a “Council of Torah Gedolim”.
In the last few months, there has been a movement within the organization to create a new rabbinic body, to represent a sort of alternative to the Chief Rabbinate. There are no details, as yet, as to the identity of the members of this small forum, but it is safe to assume that they will be the senior members of Tzohar, led by Rav David Stav.
Tzohar wishes to strengthen its position amongst Religious Zionism, which has been undermined in recent months. Recently, the organization “Derech Emunah”, which identifies with the Hardal (Torani-Religious) stream, renewed its activities, which is headed by Rav Baruch Efrati. It is hoped that this new rabbinic body will strengthen the liberal elements of Religious Zionism.
