UNESCO & The Purchase of Maarat HaMachpela

PARASHAT CHAYEI SARAH: Why do UNESCO deny the Jewish connection to the place where our Patriarchs and Matriarchs are buried?

In this week’s parasha, we read of the purchase of Maarat HaMachpela (the Cave of Machpeala) in Chevron (Hebron) by Avraham – as a burial plot for Sarah and his family.

Recently, UNESCO have attempted to deny the historical connection of the Jewish people to this site – one of the holiest in Judaism (as they have done previously with the Western Wall and Temple Mount).

Why is this?

How can it be so? Avraham bought the land – as we know from the parasha – so why is it at all contested?
